6 Steps for Getting Started with the Illinois workNet Interview Tool

October 3, 2022

The Illinois workNet Resume Builder includes an Interview Tool that lets you practice your job interviewing skills! You can watch a series of questions asked by a real interviewer and record your responses to them.

1. Name your interview.

When choosing a name for your interview, ask yourself these questions.

Are you practicing for a specific job or field? Are you just creating a general one? In either case, which interview situation are you practicing for?

Use these questions to help you decide on a good name for the interview.

2. Choose an interview type.

After choosing a name and starting your interview, you will see a list of common interview situations. Each one gives you a certain set of questions to answer. For example, you can test your responses to:

  • Behavioral questions.
  • Hiring manager questions.
  • Panel interview questions.
  • Inappropriate questions.

You can also build your own custom interview out of all possible questions. If you select this option you are provided a list of categories (i.e. accounting, skills, decision making, etc.) and from them you select which you would like to practice with.

3. Choose a format.

Your next step before watching and recording will be choosing your response format. You can choose from the following options:

  • Record your responses as video.
  • Record your responses as audio.
  • Write your responses as text.
  • Just listen to the questions. This is useful if you’d like to hear the questions, but aren’t prepared to answer them yet.

4. Record your responses.

On each question, click the play button to watch the interviewer ask the question. Record your answer using the Add Answer button above the video. Once you have recorded your responses, you will be able to review them at any time.

You can also click on the left side of the screen for tips on answering each question.

5. Watch or listen to your responses.

A lot of the time, we don’t know how we look or sound during interviews. That’s why it can be helpful to play your responses back to yourself. This will give you a sense of what the interview looks like from the interviewer’s point of view. It can be a great way of preparing for your next interview.

6. Share your responses.

Now that you’ve completed your practice interview, you have a couple of different options on what to do with it. The first option is to “Share” your assessments via a direct link you can copy/paste. This will allow you to share it with others you would like to get feedback from on how you did responding to each question. Your other option is to share to social networking sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter.
