When you are looking for a job, you are marketing your skills and abilities, just like a business promotes their goods or services. Businesses choose their platforms based on what they're selling. For example, a restaurant or dry cleaner may use platforms like Facebook and Yelp. On the other hand, a manufacturer may use LinkedIn because that is where their audience is. With that said you may want to think like an employer when picking your platform.

Let's talk about some of the major platforms that you could use for your job search. If you would like more info on these platforms, we have worksheets that discuss each one. You can find these worksheets in the Documents section of this article.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the platform most employers use to look for new hires. LinkedIn lets job seekers from all over the country connect with each other and with companies. With an account, you can create a "virtual resume" profile, connect with other people, follow companies, and join groups. Overall, it's a great place for finding job leads.

After you create a profile, choose your profile picture. This photo should match the brand you created after reading the Branding section. Complete all sections and use keywords that employers search.

To set up a LinkedIn account, follow the instructions on this page.

Facebook

Facebook is a platform where your friends may be your best resource. Employers often give bonuses to employees who suggest a new hire if the latter stays long enough. Since Facebook does not allow you to have two profiles, you will need to be careful about what you post. Employers will search you to find details of your past.

Facebook is not exactly a "job search platform." However, employers might use it to get a better idea of what you're like. Also, most employers have their own pages and post updates there. This can be a good way to find job leads.

To set up a Facebook account, follow the instructions on this page.

Twitter

Twitter is a great search tool for open jobs because businesses like its no-cost nature. Unlike Facebook, you can create more than one Twitter account. With that said, try to keep your job search profile professional. If not, save risky comments until you are hired or for a different account.

Like Facebook, employers use Twitter to post updates. Twitter's bite-sized format makes it easy for them to get right to the point and engage followers. Checking a company's Twitter is always a good idea if you're interested in working for them.

Industry Associations

Consider joining associations that relate to your job goals or career pathway. Completely fill out any profile information that is available to you.

Final Tips

Remember not to spread yourself too thin. If you create a profile, don't forget about it; keep it active! For example, if you change your profile picture, you should change it everywhere. If you earn a credential, add it to all your profiles.

Also, your online presence doesn't have to die when you get a new a job. After all, you never know when you will need it again.
