Twitter for Job Seekers

October 2, 2017

Twitter is a social media platform that lets you post 140-characters at a time. While other platforms allow people to post more of a long-form content, Twitter is all about speed and minimalism. It’s built for “quick updates” that users can digest easily. Because of this, using Twitter effectively can help you in your job search. Follow the tips below as you do so.

Getting Started

First, create a profile at www.twitter.com. Three profile elements you should focus on are: your display picture, your username, and the “About” section.

Profile Picture

Make sure you’re using the same picture as the one you use on other social media sites. This will help create your brand.

Username

On Twitter, you have both a username and a display name. Your display name shows up when people search for you and view your profile. It will also show up next to your tweets. However, your username is how Twitter identifies you when people reply to your tweets or mention you in theirs. It’s also easier to search for a profile by their username instead of display name. At any time, you are able to change your display name and your username. If you do change your username, your followers may not recognize you. Because of this, it’s important to pick a good username that reflects your brand.

“About” Section

You can include a 160-character “About” section on your profile, a spot focused on a description of you. This section can be like an “elevator speech” if you’re using Twitter in your job search. After all, it’s one of the first things people see on your profile, other than your name. Be sure to use career keywords.

You may consider setting a header image for your profile. You can use it to demonstrate some of your skills, or just to make your profile more personable.

Hashtags

When tweeting, don’t forget to use hashtags for your career field. For example, if you’re interested in nursing jobs, use the #nursing hashtag.

The best tags to use during your job search include:

  • #jobs
  • #jobslisting
  • #jobopening
  • #freelance

Also, try company-specific hashtags like #GEjobs and #Motorolajobs.

Finding Jobs

Twitter probably isn’t the first place you would expect jobs to be posted. However, companies use the platform to promote their open jobs all the time. Even if you don’t have an account, you can still search for #jobs on Twitter using the search tool. The advanced search features lets you narrow down your search results by:

  • Keywords.
  • Hashtags.
  • Phrases.
  • Locations.
  • Dates.

If you find a job posted on Twitter, mention the tweet in your cover letter or application.

Learn

You can use Twitter to stay up-to-date in your career field. Use the search tab to explore popular profiles, hashtags, and the likes. Seek out the profiles of companies you’re interested in and follow them. Search hashtags of career-fields that interest you.

Another way you can stay updated is by contributing to Tweet Chats. A Tweet Chat is an event where Twitter users get together at a set-time to discuss a specific topic. They are scheduled, have an agenda and a leader. They focus on a specific hashtags to organize everything. Check out the schedule here:
