What is Work Study?

Work study is a type of college program that gives students part-time jobs. Work study programs combine the classroom with firsthand job experience. You can find if your school provides work study opportunities by asking the financial aid office.

What are the benefits of work study?

Being in a work study program can have several benefits. For instance, it can:

  • Help develop skills you will need in the workforce.
  • Prepare you for a full-time job.
  • Help you pay college costs and other expenses.

Some examples of work study programs are Job Corps and Federal Work Study Programs (FWS).

Job Corps is a U.S. Department of Labor program. It offers free education. It usually leads to a high school diploma or GED. The program also offers career training and help in finding and keeping a job. Eligible youth must be at least sixteen.

FWS provides jobs for undergrad and graduate college students. These students must have financial need. Students may be given on-campus jobs. This program encourages community work among students. It also encourages work related to their majors to help pay for school costs.
