The GED is a nationally recognized high school equivalent program for adults who did not complete formal high school education. People have several reasons for taking the tests, such as:
  • Getting into college.
  • Getting into training or technical programs.
  • Meeting qualifications to get into the armed forces.
  • Meeting personal goals.
  • Finding a job.
  • Getting a promotion.
  • Earning more money.

What subjects are covered in the GED?
The GED consist of four subjects:
  • Reasoning through Language Arts
  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Science
  • Social Studies

How do I prepare for the GED?
Many adult education resource centers offer GED prep courses. Read the Give Yourself a New Lease on Life article to learn about adult education.

Find classess and tutoring program to prepare for the GED using the Illinois Adult Education Program Directory through Illinois Community College Board (ICCB). Search by your City or Zip Code to narrow results. For assistance, call or text (800) 321-9511 Monday-Friday between 8:30am-4:30pm. Illinois Adult Learning Hotline also has an Online Request Form.

You can also use online preparation tools, but make sure they utilize up-to-date preparation materials. The GED was revamped in 2014. GED Ready is an Official GED Practice Test is available online but has a small fee for each subject unless you have a voucher. The practice test will:
  • Build confidence to pass the GED test.
  • Provide practice questions that are similar to the actual test.
  • Show an overall score to let you know if you will likely pass the real test.
However, only the official website offers an online GED test. Be aware of other websites that claim an online test is available with a fee; this may be a scam. Most GED tests are offered in-person at a testing center.

How do I sign up to take the GED test?
You can create an account on the GED's official website. If you are eligible, you can schedule a test through your account.

This is not the only way to sign up. You can find information on classes in your area. Also, you can see if you are eligible to take the GED through the Illinois Community College Board.

Tips for taking the GED:
  • On the night before the test, relax and sleep well.
  • Read questions before you answer them.
  • Don't leave any questions unanswered.
  • Read each answer carefully, and pick the best answer.
  • Use your time wisely.
  • Keep a positive attitude.​
