Tyler Spillie is a participant enrolled in the Job Training Economy and Development (JTED). I have seen tremendous accomplishments from the client as he was previously enrolled in one of the Quad County Urban League programs a few years ago. He returned for professional growth because he believed in our mission. The client received Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Employability Job Readiness session, and safety training. These trainings were based on the clear identification of areas needing improvement. It aided the client in excelling in applying skills and developing new ones.

Moreover, this preparation allowed him to join the Nicor Gas Academy, where he completed his work-based learning experience. Upon completing his work-based learning, he applied for a position with the company through the Quad County Urban League's partnership. Furthermore, he was selected for an interview and eventually was hired as a locator. This was such a significant achievement in the participant's career journey. I am proud of all the accomplishments and determination the client has shown since he enrolled in JTED.

Obtaining the Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) credential created a holistic, physical, mental, and spiritual chain reaction inside me. This credential not only led to a promotion that seemed both improbable and richly deserved but also an uplifting experience/achievement that continues to fuel me internally each day. Obtaining this credential gave me purpose and motivates me daily to try my best and that there is still more enlightenment to experience. Even though obtaining this credential came with a slight wage increase, my main objective was to accomplish something to prove to myself that I am not done experiencing life.

I was happy for the opportunity to challenge myself by taking this class and obtaining the Certified Recovery Support Specialist certification. The motivating factor was knowing that getting this knowledge and skills would serve and enhance the lives of so many. Having a lived experience and understanding of the reality of life after addiction and now being a success story made me much more determined to acquire this certification and start changing lives. In addition to being educated, the class allowed me to hear different opinions, experiences, and stories of survival, which raised my awareness and made me more prepared for future challenges I might face while assisting others. I was given many tools. I learned so much about dual diagnosis that I wasn’t aware of. Also, once I passed the exam, my organization gave me a raise in pay, which was very much needed, and I will be expanding my case management role, which I am very much looking forward to.
