Certification for actuaries is optional, but recommended. They become certified by passing a series of exams. The exams are given by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS).

The SOA gives a series of examinations for the life and health insurance fields. They also test for the pension, finance, and investment fields.

The CAS gives a series of examinations for the property and casualty field. This field covers risks such as fire, accidents, medical malpractice, and personal injury liability.
