Certification is particularly important for practicing opticians in non-licensing states, in which case this is their only distinguishing professional credential.

The American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) offer a nationally recognized certification. Certification requires candidates to:

  • be at least 18 years old;
  • have a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • pass a written exam; and,
  • pay the exam fee.

Candidates with approximately two years of experience or optical education have demonstrated a greater likelihood of passing the examination. Continuing education for re-certification is required every three years.

The National Academy of Opticianry, Contact Lens Society of America, and the Opticians Association of America offer home study, continuing education courses to certified opticians who are members of their organization.
