In a typical work setting, library assistants and bookmobile drivers:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social contact. They communicate with others by telephone, e-mail, and in person daily.
  • Are somewhat responsible for the health and safety of others.
  • Often work in a group or as part of a team.
  • Often deal with conflict situations in which others may be angry or rude.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Usually work indoors.
  • Work near others. They share the same space with library patrons and other library employees.
  • Are occasionally exposed to diseases and infections if people visit the library while sick.

Work Performance

  • Must be exact in their work so that people can find books.
  • Regularly make decisions that impact others and the reputation of the library.
  • Work in a moderately competitive environment and meet daily deadlines.
  • Repeat the same physical activities.

Hours/Travel

  • Almost always work a set schedule.
  • May work part time or full time. Most work full time.
  • May work evenings and weekends.
